I’m in the dark with this - Julie, you were talking about deluxe editions and mono/stereo versions. I have always thought Sunshine Superman was given a contemporary release only in mono, but I could be very wrong here. My copy is in “stereo” (fake that is), a twofer with In Concert.

Then there are so many variations on albums/releases by region with Donovan, presumably the UK albums were mostly mono then, with a stereo mix more likely on US albums, and a stereo 45 short version will likely be rare.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

The really interesting (but trivial) collections are the variations on master recordings in different releases - some single versions of "Mellow Yellow" and "I Am The Walrus" have longer instrumental sections with a few additional bars in the mix.

I don't know which one that is, but I've heard the re-recording of "Sunshine Superman" - too obvious, lacks the psych layering and sounds like it belongs in a commercial! Probably the ones they have on streaming services. Even if it is a (Donovan's Version), I prefer to hear the original recordings - about 80% of the time.

Avatar 5:16pm
Honski de Boiski Cha Cha:

↳ Matt from Springfield @4:58
I just checked. There’s only a mono one released at the time in USA, the stereo mix is newly made (amazingly the multitracks were still available). And yes, different versions for different countries, even if Donovan was from UK, the UK album Sunshine Superman simply combines tracks from that album and Mellow Yellow. At least mine doesn’t, it’s the original version - if only it wasn’t ‘stereo enhanced’. Actually The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds is a similar case - in mono initially with no contemporary stereo mix, only for many a later edition to appear in horrible fake stereo..,
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

The original recording of ? and the Mysterians "96 Tears" is hard to find - I rely on an MP3 someone ripped from the More American Graffiti soundtrack LP.

Years ago at least, it was extraordinarily difficult to locate The English Beat's "March of the Swivelheads" (the Ferris Bueller "chase music") - it might be digital now but was only a vinyl B-side (and perhaps some EP's additional track).
Avatar 🦇 5:16pm
Julie:

how do you tell if it's "fake" stereo?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

↳ Honski de Boiski Cha Cha @5:16
I know the Pet Sounds box sets have remastered multi-track "real" stereo mixes, but I suppose they came out with a "false stereo" mix years before then to market for pure $$ reasons.
Avatar 🦇 5:19pm
Julie:

Avatar 🦇 5:20pm
Julie:

not that you can find it anywhere
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

↳ Julie @5:16
"I Am The Walrus" is a good example of the "false stereo" effect. Midway through the song, it switches to a more "vast" sound, but it's not stereo - it's merely the same mix with a slight delay to mimic the fullness of stereo sound.
Avatar 5:20pm
Honski de Boiski Cha Cha:

↳ Julie @5:16
It often sounds like you are hearing only the other channel ( because the other channel is eq’d differently), or there’s reverb or echo to make it sound it was in stereo. A dreadful invention. Then again, original mono pressings are always either in bad condition or very pricey :(

If you have a mono switch on your phono pre-amp/pre-amp/receiver, try turning it on when playing fake stereo albums. It can do wonders in some cases!

It's really, really good for fake stereo versions where all the bass is in one channel and treble in the other, or heavy reverb in one channel..it makes it somewhat whole again.

↳ Song: "How I Wish" by "Dorian Gräe"
This band is news to me, a more conventionally named band, Dorian Gray was around at the same time (198?-1987ish), two 7” ep’s of rather minimalistic goth punk from Finland (just vocals, bass and drums with occasional synths).

And while ELO had to "share" their "Xanadu" song with Olivia, it seems that Olivia "shared" her own side with Cliff Richard, The Tubes and Gene Kelly! (RIP, ELO friend - if he was here in 2001 or so, he'd be pleased that the ELO hits CD had an ELO-only version of "Xanadu".)

Interesting 'toid: "From 1983 to 1987, I.R.S. Records sponsored a monthly MTV show called I.R.S. Records Presents The Cutting Edge, hosted by Peter Zaremba of The Fleshtones. The series concentrated on bands that recorded for the label. The show concept would later evolve into the alternative rock program 120 Minutes, which was launched in 1986 and co-existed with Cutting Edge for about a year and a half." A forerunner of the popular 120 Minutes show!
